The idea of this project was to give young metal bands a general education and comparison of analog and digital style recording before they buy studio time and have to make decisions on the clock. I feel like it is extremely important to know what sound you want before you start recording. This project is a direct comparison between standard metal styles of recording.

I recorded standard metal techniques, both analog and digitally. The riffs were exactly the same to get an accurate comparison. The drums were recorded live, and then I made a sample instrument from the same drum kit. I, again, tried to keep the sounds similar so I can make an accurate comparison.

Analog

Digital

I recorded guitar through an amp with a microphone. I used standard techniques and standard amplifier setups. The idea was to make the sound as analog as possible.

For the drums, I also used standard microphone techniques and tried to get a sound like a live drum kit

I used the same guitar and preamp for the direct recording, but cut out the amp and recorded directly into the preamp and Pro Tools.

For the drums, I recorded the drummer's kit and sampled each individual shell and cymbal. The idea was to have a natural drum sound, made completely of samples.
